Heart for the broken
Part 2 of the "Heart and Part", Stories of the RBM team. Meet Jordan Deines. She has taken on the role of Program Director. We’re glad RBM will help her to obtain more experience for grad school and are pleased to have her passion coupled with her desire to help build and assess our programs.
I am 25 years-old and have always been super passionate about serving people. When I was a really little girl I saw a commercial on the T.V. that asked for money to feed starving children who were my age. I was deeply disturbed by the pictures of the little kids; my heart was broken. I didn’t understand why I had so much and they did not. Why were they starving while I was in my comfortable home with everything I could ever need? I looked at my mom with tears in my eyes and asked her how I could help them. She smiled and told me that because I have a big heart it is bound to be broken often for others, but that God will use it to change the world if I allow Him to. I have never forgotten that moment.
Since then, I have made my way around the world trying to live by Isaiah 1:17, “Learn to do right, seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless, and plead the case of the widow.” That verse led me to Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Barbados, Cambodia, Mexico, South Korea, Norway, Germany, Holland, Trinidad, the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, and now to Rebecca Bender Ministries. Words cannot describe how blessed I have been to have had so many opportunities to serve and love others.
After many adventures and traveling, I felt that God wanted me to return to the University of Oregon to complete my degree in psychology. I have since graduated and plan to continue my education in clinical social work. My dream is to become a licensed counselor as well as a consultant for nonprofit organizations fighting sex trafficking. God being as wise as He is, has strategically opened and closed many doors that have led me to where I am today. This is where the incredible Rebecca Bender comes into the picture! I met Rebecca through a good friend and began reaching out to her for opportunities to get involved with the fight against trafficking. I attended one of her training events and felt even more that I needed to be involved in this cause. She graciously connected me with her contacts in the field and I was able to intern at a restoration home for a bit. I learned so much from working directly with the women in the home, but my time there ended and I was reaching out to Rebecca once more. That is when God opened the door at Rebecca Bender Ministries. I am now serving as program director and could not have asked for a more amazing opportunity! I have an incredible amount to learn in this position but with Gods help and the grace and support of the incredible team that I get to work with, I gratefully welcome this challenge and look forward to positively impacting lives and changing our culture. I love working at RBM because it gives me the opportunity to do what I love most...serve God’s people! Thank you Rebecca and team for your faith in me. I look forward to changing the world with you.
